Communicative Autonomy and the Role of the Interpreter with Giovanna Carriero-Contreras

Communicative Autonomy is a fundamental principle for the profession of community interpreting. It is defined as the capacity of each party in an encounter – service users and service providers - to be responsible for and in control of their communication.

Yet it is inevitable that having an intermediary – the interpreter – inserted into the encounter will have an impact on the process.

Giovanna Carriero-Contreras is an expert in translation and interpreting services, and a nationally recognized interpreting trainer. As a passionate language access advocate, her personal mission is to ensure that limited English proficiency individuals in the United States have equal access to public services. Giovanna chairs the interpreting standards committee at International Organization for Standardization (ISO). CEO and co-founder of Cesco Linguistic Services, Giovanna is a strong proponent of professional development for interpreters and the advancement of the profession.
